Guatemala is Iberoamerican Capital of Culture 2015

The Capital Union of Latin America, UCCI is a prestigious international organization founded more than 30 years ago, composed of 25 Ibero -American capital cities (from Mexico to Argentina, Caribbean, Spain, Portugal and Andorra, as well as by 4 large cities non -capital and of great importance in their countries, such as Barcelona, ​​Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Sucre. The most important award granted by UCCI is that of Ibero -American Capital of Culture, which is annual. In order to opt for this honor, the city must demonstrate relevant cultural history, offer an outstanding cultural agenda throughout the year of the award, as well as celebrate an important historical event for the city.

In the case of Guatemala City, when presenting its candidacy at the UCCI Culture Committee in 2011, according to the established procedure, and subsequently, within the framework of the meeting of the General Assembly of the UCCI in Lisbon (Portugal) in October 2012, in which the mayors, heads of government and prefeites of the member cities, the city of Guatemala, were elected by unanimous. As “Ibero -American Capital of Culture 2015”, for its relevant cultural development, through so much activity of different kinds such as concerts, theater, painting and sculpture exhibitions, literary events, music schools, dance, painting and sculpture, programs such as “Culture in your neighborhood”, Festival of the Historic Center, among others agreed with the celebration of the 240th anniversary of the transfer of the capital city to the capital city to the valley of the Hermitage.
